Amrit Stein Tibetan Songs of Love and Compassion This CD offers a precious collection of traditional wisdom-songs of the Dakinis, Yogis and Spiritual Masters of Tibet. One of the highlights is the devotional song by Lama Tharchin Rinpoche to the magical intonations of the horse head violin. Amrit Stein arranged this album based upon her many years of extensive practice of Tibetan Buddhism. With her sensitive interpretations of the profound and precious texts and mantras she guides the listener through the many-facets of a rich and enchanting musical journey accompanied by ritual drums, dulcimer, bamboo flute and sitar. The accompanying booklet includes the texts and mantras of each of the ten songs, translated from Tibetan into German, as well as biographies and extraordinary stories from the lives of the great Tibetan masters.

According to the legend Tara was a beautiful princess who had accomplished all the spiritual levels on her path. Her master was very proud of her and told her that all she had to do was to wish for a rebirth as a male in order to reach enlightenment in her next life. Whereas, Swayambu (Swayambunath) has a more Nepali flavor to its Buddhist culture and aesthetics, Boudha is more typically Tibetan. The surrounding area has many Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Pilgrims circumambulate the main stupa, spinning the prayer wheels which recite the “Om mani padme hum,” mantra. (“The jewel is in the lotus.”) This mantra is associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, of whom the Dalai Lama is a manifestation or representation. In the video, the singer on the bench is blind. There is an image of the Dalai Lama with a statue of Avalokiteshvara behind him. There is a small flower garden, which reminded me of the Buddha’s flower sermon. Around noon it rained. People ran for cover. However, one female Buddhist monk made prostrations around the stupa despite the rain. She is inspiring as an expression of rarified devotion.

Mantra is gnosemic or trans-rational language that communicates wisdom and freedom directly through the union of ones meditation and the blessing power of the Buddhas. With mantra the medium is the message in encapsulated form – living knowing communicated through subtle vibration. This is one of several mantras of the dakini Yeshe Tsogyel.

You will remember the prowling of streets and the way your fingers brushed across the twilight. You will remember the buzzing of little bees and the extent of silence, you will remember conflict and loss, thickets of berries, the hands of a small child, the spokes of a wheel, the fragrance of night air, the tangle of your consorts hair, conversations of sunlight. You will remember all this and your heart will break into a thousand shard like wounds and each of these will become a form, a body, a water moon, a magical appearance, a rainbow, a mirage, a dream, a moments hope.” I replied: “There is no rainbow, no mirage, no water moon. There is no one to see it and nothing to be seen. This virtuous moment has never been and will never end.
